The World Atlas sample
This second more advanced tutorial is based on World Atlas, yet another monolithic self-contained database containing anything required by a rich high quality Map.World Atlas is based on a mix of both Raster and Vector Coverages, all them freely available as open data:
- Blue Marble Next Generation by NASA: an high-quality mosaic of cloud-free, medium resolution images collected by MODIS satellites during year 2001.
- ETOPO1 an accurate Global Relief Model created in 2008 by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
- Several Vector Coverages derived from Natural Earth, a public domain worldwide map dataset:
- Admin 0 - Countries: international borders of 258 countries.
- Populated Places: city and town points.
- Airports: international airports.
Above all it will be an interesting didactic opportunity to deepen even the smallest details of the overall architecture.
